The “Great Spas of Europe” stand for the great era of the European spa culture in the 19th century. They all were of international importance. A very particular spa architecture of an outstanding importance was created here, in addition to that the “Great Spas” created a type of town of its own geared to the needs of the spa life with splendid spa buildings, mansions, parks and a charming landscape. Being venues of an international society and places of communication and of spiritual exchange the “Great Spas” assumed a leading role in the intellectual and culture-historical process of the “long 19th century” since the Enlightenment.
